O’Ree (Willie) plays his first game for the Boston Bruins in Montreal.

The Bruins beat the Canadiens 3-0 at the Forum, as Willie O’Ree becomes the first African-American player in the National Hockey League. He plays two games before being sent back down for the rest of the season, plays 43 games for the Bruins during the 1960-1961 season, then plays 15 more seasons in the minor leagues. A street hockey rink is named in his honor at the Smith Street Playground in Brighton-Allston in 2018.
